Abstract: At this age, social media is the Swiss Army knife of scientists. To achieve better results, we need to sharpen our knife and learn how to use it. Otherwise, our efforts might be akin to rowing against the current. In this seminar, I will cover the lows and highs of social media for scientists, give you examples of successful science communicators and try to motivate you to spread the beauty of science across Turkey. Moreover, I will unravel the untold tricks of social media to boost our visibility and mention the importance of creating supportive communities.
About the Speaker: I am Kaan Mika, a devoted scientist with a passion for insects, currently based in Zurich, Switzerland. I have dedicated my career to making science more engaging and accessible for a wider audience. My academic journey began at Istanbul Technical University, where I learnt basics of molecular biology and genetics. Subsequently, my research focus shifted to Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as fruit flies, during a two-year study on the development of their brain at Bogazici University. Transitioning to an international landscape, I pursued my Ph.D. at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Throughout this academic endeavor, I explore the question of what distinguishes one neuron from another.
Upon completing my Ph.D., I have continued my scientific journey in Switzerland, but this time at ETH Zurich. Since 2022, I have been working as a post-doctoral researcher, deciphering the mechanisms behind these mosquitoes’ memory. Beyond my direct contributions to science, I am also an avid photographer, capturing the wonders of the world through my lens. Additionally, I engage in science communication on social media, disseminating the latest discoveries through blogs, social media videos, and writing a column at Cumhuriyet.
